What does Can I Connect do?

It checks whether you can reach a service (like AWS, Discord, or Twitch) from your browser, then compares your results with our server probes and other users to help you figure out if a problem is on your end or theirs.

Is this a speed test?

Not exactly. Speed tests measure your raw bandwidth (download/upload). Can I Connect measures latency - how long it takes to get a response from a specific service. Think of it as: speed tests measure how wide the pipe is. We measure how long it takes a message to travel through it.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Everything runs in your browser. No extensions, no accounts, no sign-ups.

What's the big number on each card?

That's your response time in milliseconds (ms). It measures how long it took your browser to send a request and get a response from that specific endpoint. Lower is better.

What does "Responded" mean vs "HTTP 200"?

When a service supports CORS (cross-origin requests), we can see the actual HTTP status code (like 200, 403, or 503). When CORS isn't available, we only know that the service responded - so we show "Responded" instead.

What does "Connection setup" mean?

The first request to any host includes DNS lookup, TCP handshake, and TLS negotiation. This setup time is shown separately because it only happens once per host per session.

What does "14ms faster" or "3ms slower" mean on the comparison strip?

That's the difference between your latency and the server probe (or community average). It helps you see whether your connection is performing better or worse than the baseline.

What's the summary banner at the top of each page?

It gives you an instant answer: "Connected to 5/5" means all endpoints responded. It also shows the median latency and the slowest endpoint, so you can quickly spot issues.

What does "Rate Limited" mean?

Some services return HTTP 429 when they receive too many requests. The latency is still valid - it just means the server told you to slow down.

I got an error code. Is the latency still valid?

Yes! Even if the server returns an error like HTTP 403, 404, or 500, the latency measurement is still meaningful. It tells you how long it took the server to respond with that error.

Where do server probes run?

Our probes run from multiple cloud regions (US East, EU Central, and Asia Pacific). They check curated endpoints every 15 minutes and store the results.

What's community data?

When users opt in to crowdsourcing (via Settings), their anonymized ping results are aggregated. This gives you a real-world picture of how the service is performing for others.

Why is my ping high to a certain service?

Physical distance is the biggest factor - a server in Tokyo will naturally have higher latency from New York. ISP routing, network congestion, and VPN overhead also contribute.

Why does a card say "No Response"?

The endpoint didn't respond within the timeout (30 seconds). This could mean the server is down, your connection is blocked, or a firewall is interfering.

Why does a card say "Timed Out"?

Same as "No Response" - the request didn't complete within 30 seconds. Check your network connection and try again.

The server probe shows a different result than my browser. Why?

Server probes run from cloud data centers with fast, direct connections. Your browser goes through your ISP, local network, and potentially a VPN. Differences are expected and informative.
